André Schwartz is a titan of the South African entertainment industry, boasting a multi-faceted career as a singer, actor, songwriter, and presenter that spans more than forty years. Born and raised in Johannesburg, his artistic journey began as a child prodigy; by age fourteen, he was already appearing on national television. Classically trained as both a virtuoso pianist and vocalist, André Schwartz developed a sophisticated musical style that seamlessly traverses pop, cabaret, big-band jazz, and musical theatre.
His recording legacy is immense, featuring fourteen studio albums, many of which attained gold status. André Schwartz became a cornerstone of the Afrikaans pop market with signature hits such as “Ek wil jou nooit weer sien” and “Lief vir alles hier.” However, he is perhaps most iconic for his work in musical theatre. His portrayal of the lead in "The Phantom of the Opera" earned him widespread critical acclaim and a 2005 Naledi Award for Best Performance in a Musical. Other major stage credits include starring roles in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and "Jesus Christ Superstar."
In 2018, André Schwartz was diagnosed with motor-neuron disease, a challenge he met with remarkable resilience, choosing to adapt his lifestyle while continuing to perform.
